We can still have Big Dreams
“Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footsteps on the moon” – Paul Brandt
In this time of Covid-19, I’ve been inspired to see people who still have big dreams and aren’t giving up on making them happen. It struck me particularly with the recent rocket launch, by Elon Musk’s Spacex, to the International Space Station that going into space and to the moon was one of those big dreams. Everyone on that project was so much part of that team, so focused on making it happen – even given the current pandemic and the many setbacks they faced, it still happened.
For me, there’s also a connection here with the highlight on discrimination and Black Lives Matter – if you have ever seen the film ‘Hidden Figures’ you will know why. It recounts the experience of three African American women who worked in NASA’s segregated west area computers division and their tenacity, skill and dogged determination to follow their dreams.

Taking steps towards your dream…
With Covid-19, big dreams may feel curtailed for us personally, as a team, or even as a whole organisation. Maybe they seem less appropriate and do need to change but that doesn’t mean to say we still can’t have them.
I have marvelled at how the lockdown has shown the resilience of people, teams and organisations, in how they have been able to adapt and manage the situation. So rather than thinking about the fact that a ‘Big Dream’ can’t happen, maybe it just needs to follow a different path and route to get there or maybe it has morphed into something slightly different.
Why not take a bit of time to consider individually, as a team or as an organisation, what that Big Dream is now, and then start to take the first steps towards it?
Those steps may need to divert for a while or be tiny or just small, but what we would encourage you to do is to start to dream again and then we would really like to encourage you to take that first step towards that dream. When we have a clear purpose and focus on something, it meets our need to feel more secure and confident and I am sure many of us could do with feeling a little of that right now.
If you’re looking for a time to reflect and start to consider that next Big Dream why not join a Breathing Space session and give yourself a moment of calm to aid that focus. You can find more details here.
